President Claudia Sheinbaum described her call with António Costa, President of the European Council, as productive, during which they agreed to hold the Mexico-European Union Summit on May 22 in Mexico City.
"Within this framework, we will sign the Modernized Global Agreement alongside Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. This is a significant opportunity to deepen our trade ties and open new avenues for economic exchange, cooperation, and dialogue between Mexico and Europe," the President posted on her social media channels.
Previously, European Council President António Costa announced that the next summit between the European Union and Mexico would take place on May 22 in Mexico City, as part of the strengthening of the bilateral relationship between both regions. Through a social media message, Costa reported that he held a telephone conversation with President Claudia Sheinbaum to finalize the date of the meeting.
“I am pleased to announce that the next EU-Mexico summit will take place on May 22 in Mexico City,” the European official wrote. Costa stated that Europe and Mexico share a common vision based on international cooperation, sustainable growth, and respect for international law. “Our common vision of the world, based on the defense of cooperation, sustainable growth, and respect for international law, unites Europe and Mexico across the ocean,” he noted.
Trade, Energy, and Climate Among Priority Topics
The President of the European Council noted that the summit will promote issues related to trade, investment, energy transition, and the environment. He also highlighted that efforts will be made to advance cooperation in gender equality, health, and scientific research. “I look forward to visiting Mexico to continue advancing our joint priorities,” Costa stated.
The relationship between Mexico and the European Union has strengthened in recent years through trade agreements, investments, and political cooperation. Currently, both parties maintain negotiations and collaboration mechanisms in strategic sectors such as clean energy, sustainable development, and supply chains.
Context: On April 21, it was reported that the Mexican government and the European Union are moving into the final stages of signing the Modernized Global Agreement (MGA), an instrument designed to update and expand the economic, political, and cooperative relationship between both parties. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported at that time that Chancellor Roberto Velasco Álvarez concluded a working tour in Brussels, Belgium, where he held meetings with European authorities to prepare for the upcoming Mexico-European Union Summit.
With the modernization of the Mexico-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which eliminates 83% of tariffs, the country will need to export premium agro-industry products to Europe, including processed foods and specialized manufacturing, due to the high standards required by the European Union, stated Pedro Canabal Hermida, Partner of Legal and Foreign Trade at Baker Tilly.
"We are now being very specific. It’s not just agro-industry; it’s premium. It’s not just food; it’s processed. It’s not just manufacturing; it’s specialized. I also see opportunities in medical devices. Therefore, the value of our exports will matter more than their volume," he expressed.
